Kinja'd!!!

I’ve got an old Windsor Tourist that has been through a lot with me. In 2006 I rode it from Minneapolis to New Orleans, for example. Currently, I’m whipping my now fatter self back into shape, and I want to get back into riding. I dug the old girl out of the shed and I’ve been fixing everything that ails her.

I know Oppo has some bike experts, so here’s the dealio: My front derailleur is borked. I need a new one. It’s a Shimano Tiagra P/N FD-4403. The bike has a triple front chainring, and a 9-speed out back. The derailleur is a clamp on with a 28.6 mm clamp, and the shifters are Shimano Tiagra STI.

This part number is discontinued and impossible to find. What’s compatible? I tried researching it myself, but there are SO MANY different derailleurs!!! I just want something that’s durable and will be easy to slap on, adjust and go.

Shimano and SRAM road derailleurs are not compatible, so match the brand to the shifter you have.

In all honesty, a derailleur is little more than a pantograph. It just swings between its inner and outer limit screws. You could then, in theory, just swap it with a two or three speed front derailleur and adjust the shift cable properly.

If you’re on a budget, most any Shimano road derailleur with a 28.6mm clamp should work. Might not be a bad idea to upgrade it to a Shimano 105.

This might be hard to find online because 9spd is near all but forgotten and the internet is all about what’s new and hot. I’ve got no doubt that a local shop would be able to source the correct part for you for a marginal expense. All the better if you can install and tune it yourself.

You’ll probably have to change over to Sora components, from the 2016 QBP catalog the Tiagra line is now 10-speeds and Sora is 9-speeds.

You could go with a Sora FD-3503 front derailleur, and if your front shifter isn’t compatible get a Sora LD-3503 front shifter to go with it.

Derailleur is borked. You obviously need a new bike.

Benjrblant is mostly right. Other than clamp size, you also need to watch for bottom/top pull and the width of the derailleur. Derailleurs designed for wide gear ranges are built wider to accommodate more cross-chaining because people are boneheads and like to run granny in front and nine out back or top gear up front and first out back. Wider derailleurs can also cause trouble with the front brifter indexing properly.

I don’t think the bike has seen an update either.
